Shopping vocabulary, expressions, and phrases I

  •  Bargain hunting
    • Spend time in the shops looking for items to buy at the lowest price.
      "During a sale, I go bargain hunting with my friends!"

B: If I just happened to see something on sale, If I like it, I will buy it.

A: Do you like to go shopping during the sale season?

B: I like affordable (cheap/bargain) clothes, but I don’t like crowded places, so I don’t usually go.


  • Do the shopping/grocery
    • Do shopping regularly to buy food and other necessities.
      "My husband and I generally do the shopping/grocery together on Saturday mornings."

A: Where do you go to buy food and other necessities?

B: I regularly (usually / often) do online shopping.

A: When do you usually buy food and other necessities?

B: I use a delivery service every Tuesday and aside from that I do the shopping almost every day after work.



  • Go shopping
    • Go to the shops/mall to buy things.
      "She's gone shopping - I've no idea when she'll be back/come home!"

                            B: I usually go shopping in SM.

                            A: When do you usually go to SM to shop?

                            B: I usually go once a month. 

 

  • Fitting room 
    • A place to try on clothes to see if they fit or suit [/so͞ot] you.
      "I need your opinion. Will you come with me to the fitting room?"

  

  • Price tag
    • A label showing the price of an article/item/good/stuff/thing.
      "Before I try it on I must find the price tag - just to be safe!"
       

 

  • Receipt
    • A piece of paper is given in a shop as proof that you have paid for an article. (US: sales slip)
      "If you keep the receipt you'll be able to exchange the article."

  • Refund [henkin]
    • Money paid back to a customer who is not satisfied [manzoku] with an article purchased.
      "You must produce the receipt if you want to get a refund."

Requirements for refund/replacement:

1. produce/show/present the receipt

2. item is unused/in-store condition

3. return within a week

4. item is for replacement

5. change of mind is not valid/not enough reason

  

  • Summer or Winter sales
    • A period in the year when articles are sold at a reduced price.
      "The kids need new winter coats but I'll  try and wait until the sales to buy them."

  • Shop around
    • Visit a number of shops selling similar articles in order to compare the prices.
      "The Internet makes it easier nowadays to shop around before buying anything."

 

  • Shop assistant
    • A person who serves customers in a shop.
      "The shop assistant was extremely patient while my mother tried on several pairs of shoes."

 

  • Take something back.
    • Return something that you have bought
      "The hairdryer didn't work properly so she took it back to the shop."
